The NFL was shocked when the San Francisco 49ers released their depth chart ahead of the 2023 season.
The 49ers named Brock Purdy as the starter but they also listed Sam Darnold as the No. 2 ahead of Trey Lance.
Lance’s fall to the bottom was surprising to many and it prompted the 49ers to start taking calls on the former third-overall pick.
Not long after, San Francisco agreed to trade Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick.
It was a tough pill for the 49ers to swallow considering the cost it took them to move up to select Lance, but nonetheless, they did right by him to send him to a situation where he’ll have more opportunities to compete for a role.
The Cowboys ultimately landed Lance, but it appears there were several other teams interested in trading for the young quarterback via Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
The Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens are two teams that had conversations with San Francisco about a possible trade for Trey Lance.
In the NFC, the Detroit Lions also showed interest, per sources.

The Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens employ dual-threat running backs in Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, respectively, while the Detroit Lions could still be looking for their long-term answer at quarterback despite having Jared Goff.
With San Francisco looking to accept a lower-round pick for Lance, it’s no surprise to see teams register interest though Dallas ended up giving them the best offer with a fourth-rounder.
Teams around the league will always do their due diligence on players and if the value of acquiring them makes sense then they should definitely go for it.
Regardless, Lance has a new home now and it’ll be interesting to see what he does with the new opportunity.
