The NBA draft is an exciting annual event that gives fans a chance to see the next generation of basketball stars who are going to run the league.
The NBA hasn’t made many changes to the draft in years but former player Gilbert Arenas has a plan that would really shake things up.
On the latest episode of his show, he suggested that the players be the ones to choose where they go.
He mentioned a scenario where an incoming rookie wanted to play with LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.
If the Lakers had the 17th pick in the draft, that player would have to commit to the level of pay that comes with a 17th pick.
This would definitely complicate and change things, but would it also make everything more exciting?

The way the draft works now is very straightforward: the order is fairly selected at random and the top team is able to choose the most coveted rookie.
As the nights go on, the pool of players dwindles.
Arenas thinks it shouldn’t be the teams that are choosing, but the players.
That would lead to a lot more excitement, which would be nice, but it wouldn’t be fair to the most impaired teams in the association.
The first picks usually go to some of the worst teams in the league.
This is because the worse a team performs, the better chances they have of being in the top spot.
This method allows teams to be more competitive in the long run, even if they are struggling now.
Arenas’ plan throws all of that into disarray, which is why the league wouldn’t go for it.
It’s a fun idea, but it’s one that will never become a reality.
