This offseason, it looked like, for once, the New York Jets would have a team that was, at least on paper, a Super Bowl contender.
They traded for Aaron Rodgers, added wide receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, both of whom had played with Rodgers on the Green Bay Packers, and signed four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook.
But after Rodgers tore his Achilles just moments into his Jets regular-season debut on Monday at MetLife Stadium, the Jets are back to their familiar position of being an undermanned, underdog club.
Former NFL quarterback Carson Wentz, who was a No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft, seemed to take a shot at the Jets on social media.

It will be up to another former No. 2 overall pick in Zach Wilson to quarterback the Jets and make them competitive, unless the Jets change their minds and pursue an outside option like Wentz.
Somehow, they were able to come from behind and defeat the Buffalo Bills, one of the favorites to contend for a spot in the Super Bowl, on Monday in overtime, 22-16.
New York got the job done with defense by forcing Josh Allen into three interceptions and coming up with four forced turnovers in total.
But with the insane amount of depth and talent throughout the AFC, winning with defense won’t be enough.
Wilson, who has completed just 55.6 percent of his pass attempts since coming into the league two years ago, will have to ascend to a much higher level if the Jets will have a good shot at making the playoffs.
Regardless, their fans will have to keep dreaming of celebrating a world championship for the first time since the 1968 season.
