New York Yankees’ star Aaron Judge had a record season, with 62 home runs and 11.4 Wins Above Replacement (WAR).
Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels had another dominant two-way season, and St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman was the MVP of the National League.
Justin Verlander posted a 1.75 ERA, and Sandy Alcantara looked like a vintage ace with his combination of endurance and talent.
Yet MLB analyst and sabermetrician Bill James believes Los Angeles Dodgers‘ first baseman Freddie Freeman is the best player in the league at the moment.
In my opinion, it is no longer reasonable to say that Mike Trout is the best player in baseball. That honor now belongs to Freddie Freeman,” James tweeted.

He explained his reasoning in an article.
Freeman Is One Of The Most Consistent Players In MLB
James obviously considers performance in recent years, not only in 2022, when making his choice.
In reality, while he doesn’t play a premium defensive position, James’ pick is not so outrageous.
Freeman has long been one of the best and most consistent players in baseball.
He has performed at a similar level since 2011, his first full season with the Atlanta Braves.
He even won an MVP award with them in 2020, and the World Series in 2021.
In 2022, his first season with the Dodgers, he slashed a cool .325/.407/.511 with 21 home runs, 117 runs scored, 100 RBI, and even 13 stolen bases.
In fact, 2022 was his best season yet, since he had a career-high 7.1 WAR.
His combination of consistency, production, leadership, and experience make him a viable candidate for the “best player in baseball” unofficial recognition.
He is perhaps not the most popular choice among fans, but he does have a case.
