The Atlanta Falcons are in a privileged position right now.
They have a young quarterback to build their team around, but they also have one of the best backups in the game.
And, given the current quarterback landscape, multiple teams should be on the phone to try to get their hands on Kirk Cousins.
When asked about that, Falcons GM Terry Fontenot admitted that they’ve been getting calls about Cousins and multiple players.
Moreover, he revealed that he was keeping an open mind about potentially trading anybody on the roster:
“We just have to be patient there,” Fontenot said. “We’re always open — not just talking about Kirk [Cousins], but with really anybody on our roster — we have a lot of those calls. I’ve probably talked to already six or seven GMs since the draft has ended, and they’re talking about their roster, we’re talking about our roster. Because after you get through the draft, that shifts some things in terms of needs and surplus and all that.”
Cousins was tied to multiple teams when the Falcons benched him in favor of Michael Penix Jr.
However, they chose not to release him in the offseason, even though that meant paying him much more money.
The Falcons chose to hold onto him after the NFL Draft, so he would also have a say on his next destination by waiving his no-trade clause.
Needless to say, multiple teams are hesitant to meet the Falcons’ aspirations, as they reportedly want whoever trades for him to pay a big chunk of his salary.
There aren’t that many starting-caliber quarterbacks up for grabs in the league right now, and an injury or a slow start to the season could change the whole picture for a team.
And in the worst possible scenario, they can have an experienced and proven backup there in case something goes wrong with their new starter.
