Doc Rivers’ tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers came to a predictable end this season.
Once again, the team failed to get past the second round of the playoffs, even though they had two chances of closing out the Boston Celtics in that series.
Rivers’ well-documented playoff meltdowns have put an asterisk on his legacy, and it always seemed unlikely that he would get another head coach position, at least during this coaching cycle.
He even admitted that he didn’t know what would be next in his career, but it seems like he’s not going to be unemployed for much longer.
According to a report by Andrew Marchand of The New York Post (via Legion Hoops), Rivers will replace former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy on ESPN’s NBA broadcasts starting next season.

Rivers’ voice may not be the most pleasant sound for NBA fans, but he definitely knows a thing or two about the game and the ins and outs of the league, and how things go down in the locker room.
Like him or not, Rivers is a 14-year veteran and an NBA championship coach, and a guy who’s earned his stripes in the Association.
What’s ironic is the fact that ESPN reportedly fired Van Gundy because of his steep salary, and it’s unlikely that Rivers would take a big pay cut to accept this position.
This might put an end to his days as a coach in the league, but at least he’ll continue to be tied to professional hoops for years to come.
