The New England Patriots have a legitimate MVP candidate under center. Drake Maye looks like a star in the making, and he’s just getting started.
As such, teams are trying to figure out the best way to stop him. And, given his sneaky mobility, it looks like opposing teams are trying to keep him in the pocket. According to Evan Lazar, Maye has realized that teams are trying this approach against him more often now:
“Patriots QB Drake Maye says he has seen teams start to spy him more. He added that he told Bucs LB Lavonte David that they don’t need to spy him: ‘I’m not that fast.’ Maye said it can be good for the offense since it pulls a defender out of coverage,” Lazar posted on X.

Maye might be humble, but even though he’s not Lamar Jackson, he’s already shown that he can be a dual threat. He’s got that Josh Allen-type of build, and while he’s not as big or fast as the Buffalo Bills’ star, he’s made some big plays with his legs and is quite tough to take down on the open field, so this approach certainly makes perfect sense.
Also, he’s a pocket passer first and foremost, so he shouldn’t feel too bad about getting these types of looks, knowing that someone will most likely be open. Opposing defensive coordinators will continue to test things out until they figure out the best way to take his strengths away from him, but so far, nothing has worked.
Maye and the new-look Patriots continue to roll. They’re looking like one of the three best teams in the AFC. And even though it’s still way too early in his career, it sounds like this team has found the right guy to lead them back to the top.
