In a rather surprising development, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced they placed starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain.
Gonsolin was expected to take the ball on Monday against the Miami Marlins, but will rest for a few days instead.
Michael Grove will make start for him, and could stick for one more turn if he impresses.
As for Gonsolin, his forearm strain isn’t believed to be too serious, and he should return this season.
In fact, the player said on Monday that he thinks he’ll be ready to return after a minimum stay on the injured list.
Manager Dave Roberts seemed to confirm this, according to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.
“Dave Roberts said he expects Tony Gonsolin to miss just two starts. The team had already been discussing curbing his innings in September, but said with “a little smoke” in his forearm, now was the time to do so and nip it in the bud,” Ardaya tweeted.

It’s the perfect time for the Dodgers to watch Gonsolin’s workload, one of the largest of his career.
A Good Time To Get Some Rest
After all, the Dodgers’ priority is the postseason and having as many healthy, fresh players as they can in October.
The 28-year-old right-hander has been one of the best pitchers in the National League this year, posting an incredible 2.10 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and 116/35 K/BB ratio across 128.1 innings (23 starts).
Gonsolin said he felt “some tightness coming out of my last start,” but doctors considered he didn’t need an MRI.

While Gonsolin should be back soon, it appears this injury puts him out of the race for the NL Cy Young award.
