The Arizona Diamondbacks are locking up their superstar.

Arizona signed their star outfielder and shortstop Ketel Marte to a five-year, $76 million extension.

Marte hit .318 with 14 homers and 50 RBIs in 2021.

The deal is pending a physical of course, but once that is done, Marte will be locked up for the long-term.

The Diamondbacks are a team that is in a rebuilding process as of now, but if there’s one piece for them to build around, it would be Marte.

Marte has been a member of the Diamondbacks’ organization since arriving in 2017.

In that time frame, he has hit .295 with 67 home runs and 236 RBIs.

Locking Up Their Star

This is a good move for the Diamondbacks.

They don’t appear to have much of a chance at winning in 2022, but for a small market team, it’s always good to lock up your star.

Marte will be the Diamondbacks’ centerpiece for the next several years, and if you’re Arizona, this is the piece you want to build around.

The Diamondbacks had a nightmare season in 2021, finishing in last place in an ever-competitive National League West division with a 52-110 record, 55 games behind the division champion San Francisco Giants.

Again, Arizona doesn’t appear to have a very good chance at competing this year or for the next several years.

They are still rebuilding, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have Marte locked up for the long-term, and it’s not like the team is completely devoid of talent.

They do also have Carson Kelly, Christian Walker, Madison Bumgarner, and Zac Gallen.

Gallen and Kelly are key pieces going forward should Arizona end up building a winner down the road.

But for now, it’s good for them to have their star player signed for the foreseeable future.
