The Washington Commanders looked much better when Carson Wentz wasn’t behind center last season.
But as better as Taylor Heinicke was, it was evident that Ron Rivera’s team could still do better at the quarterback position.
They trusted rookie Sam Howell to start the last game of the season, and he looked poised and in control, and the team was so high on him that they didn’t get tangled up in any potential move for another player in the offseason.
Now, Howell will get to run the show, and according to former QB Dan Orlovsky, his arm strength could be his cover letter at the next level.
His deep ball is absolutely his strength. Has an absolute hose
How EB utilizes it with also much heavier RPO use and his legs being in play will determine how good this offense can be https://t.co/jnanK5nRw9

Orlovsky also said it’ll be interesting to see how new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy chooses to use him, citing that the run-pass option will be of utmost importance to their offense.
The Commanders have a strong running back committee and a solid offensive line, so there should be plenty of gaps for their speedsters and playmakers to do damage down the field if they give Howell enough time to operate.
He wasn’t the most polished prospect by any means, but he did have a very impressive final season with the UNC Tar Heels before entering the league, and his ability to put up big numbers has never been in question.
He’ll also have one of the best offensive minds in the game drawing up plays and game plans according to his strengths, so don’t be shocked if he takes the league by storm in his first full season as a starter.
