On Sunday, the Washington Commanders headed into their season opener on the road against Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond Jones Stadium with high hopes of pulling off the upset over the reigning NFC South division winners on their home field.
The Commanders have a new sense of purpose coming into this 2024 NFL season, with the team starting fresh with Dan Quinn taking over for Ron Rivera as head coach and the franchise being able to rally around talented rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, whom the team selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
With Daniels getting Commanders fans excited for the 2024 campaign and beyond, many fans in the nation’s capital tuned in for this game against the Buccaneers to see whether the rookie has what it takes to make this team relevant again in the NFC.
Fortunately, Daniels didn’t disappoint as he had a decent game, rushing for two touchdowns, but the same can’t be said for kicker Cade York, who played so poorly that the Commanders released him on Monday, according to the team’s X account.

York missed two field goals in the loss to the Buccaneers in Week 1, missing from 47 yards and another from 56 yards while also having a terrible kickoff that went out of bounds.
The performance of the 23-year-old kicker was enough for the Commanders to part ways with him, as it is clear this team isn’t messing around this season as it wants to see progress or changes will be made immediately.
