The Indianapolis Colts are adding to their defense.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, they’re signing veteran cornerback Xavien Howard.
He did not play last season, but he’s a former Pro Bowler who could have something left in the tank.
“Howard’s a 2x All-Pro whose 29 INTs since 2017 is tops in the NFL,” Schultz wrote on X.

After eight seasons with the Miami Dolphins, he was let go following the 2023 season.
He’s struggled with injuries, but given his talent, the Colts’ need at the position, and his familiarity with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who was the Dolphins’ defensive back coach when Howard entered the league, the move makes sense for Indianapolis.
Anarumo also worked him out last season when he was with the Cincinnati Bengals.
JuJu Brents, Kenny Moore II and Jaylon Jones are dealing with injuries, and rookie Justin Walley recently sustained a season-ending ACL injury.
The Colts are looking to add some aggressiveness to their defense, and Howard has excelled in Anarumo’s press-man coverage system.
He led the NFL in interceptions twice (2018 and 2020) and will look to make the most of what might be his final chance in the league.
The Colts are an intriguing team with plenty of concerns to address, especially when it comes to their quarterback situation, but adding a proven veteran like Howard should help the cause, at least on defense.
