The Dallas Mavericks made a tough call.
No one thought Luka Doncic would be available, much less at such a major discount.
Then, in a shocking and unexpected turn of events, Shams Charania announced that he was on his way to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Not many people knew what to make of this deal.
However, Colin Cowherd believes it actually makes some sense.
Shortly after the news broke, the renowned analyst took to social media to claim that maybe the new owners didn’t care for Doncic’s impending contract extension, especially considering his struggles with injuries:
“The trade doesn’t make much historical sense. But you have a new owner that paid a fortune for the franchise — and he was staring down the barrel of a 350M extension w an increasingly injured star. 4 years ago Embid was the next Shaq, remember? Only thing that makes sense to me,” Cowherd wrote.

This makes some sense, and there have always been concerns regarding Doncic’s work ethic and conditioning, but still.
If health was a concern for the Mavericks, perhaps trading for Anthony Davis, of all people, wasn’t the wisest move.
Davis has been one of the most injury-prone players in the league since he entered the league, and he’s going to turn 32.
Doncic, on the other hand, is 25.
Also, the Mavs are owned by one of the wealthiest casino and resort moguls on Earth, so money might not be a major issue.
The Mavs got better on offense, but their offense and shot-creation will regress without their star playmaker and facilitator.
The Lakers, on the other hand, just got a new franchise cornerstone to build around, pretty much gift-wrapped for them.
All that while just giving up one of their first-round picks and their aging and brittle star big man.
