It isn’t entirely clear who will start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers next season.
Brock Purdy, who was a rookie last year and the last player taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, took over in Week 13 for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, and he did an admirable job.
But he is recovering from a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, which has opened a window for Trey Lance to regain the starting job he was given at the start of last season.
There is also apparently a slight chance that free agent acquisition Sam Darnold will end up starting under center, at least according to a few people.
Star running back Christian McCaffrey says it doesn’t matter to him or his other teammates who ends up winning the starting QB job.
“For me, no matter who the quarterback is, I have to get open. I’m not thinking about the quarterback, I’m thinking about getting open, hitting the right holes, doing my job. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter. I think everybody has that mentality — it’s do your job, do it at the highest level.” McCaffrey said.
McCaffrey also added that all three signal-callers are “amazing” and “great options.”
He praised Purdy for not just playing well but also how he carried himself while saying that Lance has looked great this offseason.
What may add a little bit of intrigue to San Francisco’s QB competition is the fact that McCaffrey played with Darnold for a season on the Carolina Panthers before he was traded in October to the Niners.
If and when the Niners get their quarterback situation sorted out, they should be one of the front-running contenders for the Super Bowl championship.
They already possessed the best defense in the NFL last season, and it should get even better with the addition of star defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.
On offense, McCaffrey could perform a little better with a full offseason and training camp with San Francisco under his belt.NEXT: Trey Lance Says That He Is Finally '100 Percent'
