After the news broke about the Los Angeles Chargers exercising the fifth-year option on star quarterback Justin Herbert, the clock started on what will inevitably be a lucrative contract extension for the rising star.
With the Philadelphia Eagles recently signing Jalen Hurts to an extension and Lamar Jackson finally inking a new deal with the Baltimore Ravens, the Chargers will join the Cincinnati Bengals as the teams next in line to take care of their star quarterbacks.
It remains uncertain at this point in time which quarterback will get an extension first between Herbert and Joe Burrow, but it will happen in the near future with one of these two to set the market for quarterbacks moving forward.
Chargers general manager Tom Telesco recently appeared on The Jim Rome Show and admitted there’s no timetable to get a deal done with Herbert, but the team would rather get it done sooner than later.

If Burrow gets a deal done with the Bengals before Herbert comes to terms with the Chargers, it’ll increase the price for Los Angeles as he’ll almost certainly want to get paid more than Burrow.
Only time will tell which one of these star quarterbacks puts pen to paper first and therefore sets the market for the next in line, but both players deserve to be the highest-paid player in the league.
The Chargers want to get a deal done sooner rather than later to save some money and get their face of the franchise paid while securing his long-term future with the team.
