Contract negotiations in Dallas have become synonymous with prolonged deliberation under Jerry Jones’ leadership. The Dallas Cowboys owner operates on his own timeline, a characteristic that influenced the unexpected trade of Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers this offseason.
That transaction created friction between Jones and Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, over the direction and pace of discussions. George Pickens now faces similar uncertainty with his own future in Dallas.
Mulugheta represents Pickens as well, and the agent’s preference for direct negotiation clashes with Jones’ reluctance to work through intermediaries. This fundamental disagreement could ultimately push Pickens toward free agency when the season concludes.
Former NFL receiver Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson has voiced his perspective on Pickens’ situation, believing the young wideout should explore options beyond Dallas.
“I love the situation for (George Pickens) with the Cowboys, but I would love to see him have his own team. I would love to see him be somewhere else, and be 1A, not having to be 1B to someone else. Not having to be the Robin to someone else’s Batman. As great as he is, he’s an immense talent. He’s a true number one that can carry a team for himself, outside of Dallas,” Ocho said on Inside the NFL.

Johnson’s concerns extend beyond Pickens’ role on the field. He points to Jones’ history with major contract extensions involving Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott, citing protracted negotiations that drained resources and created unnecessary tension.
The dynamics surrounding Parsons’ deal only reinforced his skepticism about how Dallas handles star players during their prime earning years. According to Johnson, Pickens stands to gain considerably more financial security by testing the open market. The receiver possesses the talent to command top-tier compensation while establishing himself as a franchise centerpiece elsewhere rather than remaining in Lamb’s shadow in Dallas.
This season, Pickens has accumulated 58 receptions for 908 yards and seven touchdowns. His touchdown total surpasses his previous career high, while his receiving yardage pace suggests he will exceed his 2023 career best of 1,140 yards established during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
