The New York Mets recently named franchise great Carlos Beltran as a special assistant to general manager Billy Eppler.
It’s the full circle being completed for the former MLB star, or almost: he played for the Mets, he was appointed as the manager in late 2019, and now he is a member of the front office.
He didn’t get to manage a game with the team back then, as peer pressure stemming from the recently uncovered sign-stealing scandal of 2017 forced the Mets to part ways with him.
He was out of the game for a couple of years, and now he is finally getting a chance to return as a front office member of the team he played for from 2005 to 2011.
Being a special assistant to the general manager could represent a broad range of tasks and duties.
Beltran himself discussed them with SNY.
“Carlos Beltrán says he wants to help the Mets’ minor leaguers in his new role with the team,” they tweeted, with a clip of the former star describing his role.

He says he is going to be working at all levels, with both major leaguers and prospects.
He is, however, going to prioritize his work with prospects.
Beltran even says he will put emphasis on the young future stars in the Dominican Republic.
If someone knows how to take that necessary step (both skill-wise and mentally) from a top prospect to a successful major leaguer, it’s Beltran.
He will have a lot on his plate, but he has the right tools to succeed at his new job.
