The St. Louis Cardinals have been hit hard by starting pitching issues this season.
Just when things appeared to be getting better, Steven Matz went on the injured list and may be done for the season.
Matthew Liberatore also struggled against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.
The rotation is set for this coming weekend series against the New York Mets.
On Thursday, they will turn to Adam Wainwright, who may be on the verge of losing his spot in the starting rotation if he struggles yet again.
He is 3-7 with an astronomical 8.78 ERA.
On Twitter, Katie Woo of The Athletic revealed the team’s pitching plans.
Cardinals/Mets probables:
Thurs- RHP Adam Wainwright (3-7, 8.78) vs LHP José Quintana (0-4, 3.03)
Fri- LHP Zack Thompson (2-4, 3.96) vs TBA
Sat- RHP Miles Mikolas (6-8, 4.27) vs RHP Kodai Senga (9-6, 3.30)
Sun- RHP Dakota Hudson (4-0, 4.03) vs RHP Carlos Carrasco (3-6, 6.40)— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) August 17, 2023
Wainwright will be opposed tonight by veteran left-hander Jose Quintana, who spent the back half of the 2022 season in St. Louis and even started Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the eventual National League champion Philadelphia Phillies.
This will be Quintana’s first start at Busch Stadium since then.
Left-hander Zack Thompson will go on Friday night.
He is 2-4 with a 3.96 ERA and has pitched well as of late.
The lefty is also taking Matz’s spot in the rotation.
His opponent has not been announced yet.
Miles Mikolas, who has been one of St. Louis’ most reliable starters this year, will go on Saturday against Kodai Senga.
For the series finale on Sunday, St. Louis will send the suddenly rejuvenated Dakota Hudson to the mound against veteran Carlos Carrasco.
The Cardinals will enter the series against the Mets with a record of 54-67 on the season.
