The quarterback position is going to be a large question mark for the Arizona Cardinals during the 2023 season.
The Cardinals are going to be without Kyler Murray to begin the new season as he continues to work his way back from a torn ACL he suffered in December of last year.
Murray’s injury leaves Arizona staring down either Clayton Tune or Joshua Dobbs as their Week 1 starter, though neither has the experience or talent that Murray has.
Most analysts coming into the year projected Colt McCoy to lead the Cardinals’ offense as he served as Murray’s backup the past two seasons.
However, Arizona made the shocking decision to release McCoy just a couple of weeks before their Week 1 opener.
Head coach Jonathan Gannon discussed what went into the decision to part ways with the veteran via PHNX Cardinals.
“Just like with every decision…we look at the body of work…felt like it was in the best interest of the team,” Gannon said.

Gannon’s explanation doesn’t do much to shed light on the decision-making process, leaving things even more confusing for Arizona’s fans.
McCoy would have given the Cardinals some semblance of continuity and competency, though now they’re left with either Tune or Dobbs to control the offense.
The move could be interpreted as a sneaky way for the franchise to tank during the year in hopes of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
While McCoy wasn’t likely going to win the team many games, his release almost assures they’ll be worse than previously thought.
