Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton came under fire over the past few weeks after he called a couple of playoff quarterbacks “game managers.”
This included Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, and Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
One of those quarterbacks – Purdy – is in the Super Bowl, meaning Newton had to keep talking about him in the two weeks leading up to the big game.
While Newton slightly walked back his earlier comment, he didn’t deny that he trusts the team around Purdy on a game-winning drive in the Super Bowl more than the player himself, per “First Take.”
“I trust his resources. I trust Deebo. I trust George Kittle. I trust Christian McCaffrey. I trust Brandon Aiyuk,” Newton said. “It’s no hate … When I think about the 49ers, it’s a loaded team. Did he ask for that? No. He’s been playing lights-out football.”

What Newton is really saying is that Purdy is a product of his situation and that he might not be as good if he wasn’t in such an advantageous system.
That’s true of basically all quarterbacks in the NFL nowadays, as only the best can make do with less – such as Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes right now and Tom Brady in the past.
It’s a little harsh to not give Purdy any credit for the 49ers’ success in 2023, especially since Purdy was an MVP finalist and finished with top-five numbers in the regular season.
