The Cleveland Browns have had a nightmare season at 3-10, and the path for things to improve isn’t clear, given the fact that the team still has a painful $72.9 million cap hit over each of the next two years for quarterback Deshaun Watson staring them in the face this offseason.
There has been a strong push for the team to select a new quarterback in the 2025 draft.
Some suggest re-signing Jameis Winston, who has performed better as a starter than Watson did, while others recommend exploring a trade for a veteran quarterback before the start of the 2025 season.
No matter how you look at it, most fans are done with the Watson experiment and are ready for a new QB, but according to a recent report by Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, those fans might not get their wish.
Cabot outlined the Browns’ plan for the QB position next year in her most recent article for Cleveland.com, and fans better get used to seeing Watson under center.
“The Browns believe that Watson can still play at a high level, and that the first seven games of this season were not a true reflection of his ability. Granted, he was not without plenty of blame for the 1-6 record,” Cabot said.
It’s not the news many were hoping for, as Watson still hasn’t thrown for 300 yards a single time in his three years in Cleveland.
For the second year in a row, his backup has come in after he suffered a season-ending injury and performed notably better than he did.
It’s a tough situation, but with that kind of cap hit, there’s not much flexibility to go another route.
