Denver Broncos fans should be very excited about the future of their defense, especially after the news that broke Tuesday.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos have picked up the fifth-year option on Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain.
Through his first three seasons in the NFL, the former national champion has proven to be one of the league’s best cover corners and overall defensive backs.

A long-term deal should be in his future at some point very soon.
Any player who has put up the type of production that he has on a team that hasn’t been super competitive deserves a big, fat contract.
The two-time Pro-Bowler and All-Pro defender is the Broncos’ best player on that side of the ball.
That should not be up for discussion.
He has been stable and consistent so far, as he has missed just one game in three years.
According to Pro Football Reference, Surtain hasn’t allowed an opposing completion percentage above 60% in any of his three seasons with the Broncos.
The former All-American has seven career interceptions and almost 190 career tackles.
Still just 24 years of age, he appears to have already reached superstardom.
The Broncos will now look to build around him on the defensive side.
Obviously, quarterback is the biggest need for Sean Payton’s team this upcoming draft.
But, they have only two picks in the top 80.
They are going to need to be very sure about their picks if they want to capitalize on the talent of the particular players that they select and the players that they already have, such as Surtain.
