Brock Purdy took the NFL world by storm last year.
Not only did the former “Mr. Irrelevant” find himself starting for the San Francisco 49ers, but he led them to the NFC Championship to boot.
While many around the league believed that Purdy’s success was just due to the 49ers’ system, the numbers say otherwise.
According to David Lombardi’s summation of PFF data, Purdy led the league in completion percentage on intermediate passes in 2022.
This is remarkable on a number of levels…
Best completion percentages on PFF's record for intermediate (10-19 yards) passes, minimum 20% of qualifying attempts:
1. Brock Purdy (2022), 49ers: 80.4%
2. Kirk Cousins (2019), Vikings: 72.9%
3. Joe Burrow (2021), Bengals: 71.9%— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) May 22, 2023
Purdy’s 80.4% completion rate of 10-19-yard passes was nearly 10% higher than Joe Burrow and Kirk Cousins.
Despite his lack of significant draft capital and his spot at third on the depth chart, Purdy was able to defy all odds that were placed on him.
Will he be ready to begin the 2023 season?
That is the main question that is currently being asked by 49ers fans.
Purdy tore his UCL during the NFC Championship, rendering him unable to throw the ball for the rest of the game.
While his timeline is largely unknown, it appears that 49ers fans would prefer him to be the starter moving forward.
Despite being drafted as the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Trey Lance hasn’t necessarily instilled fan confidence thus far.
He was injured at the beginning of the 2022 campaign, making it difficult to get an accurate read on his NFL abilities.
The 49ers’ quarterback position has many questions ahead of the 2023 season, especially considering the team has recently brought in Sam Darnold as another option.
With their current roster, will the 49ers be able to make another deep playoff run this year?
