Brock Purdy‘s ascent with the San Francisco 49ers is so unique it even sounds scripted.
Not many insiders and scouts were high on Purdy coming out of Iowa State, with some even admitting that they had to check their notes on him when he attended the NFL Draft Combine.
The Niners took Purdy with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, but even if they traded Jimmy Garoppolo away or waived him, not many people expected him to actually make the roster.
Fast forward to today, and Mr. Irrelevant is irrelevant no more, as he’s yet to be defeated in his brief NFL career, leading the Niners all the way to the NFC Championship Game.
Notably, that won’t be his first time going toe-to-toe with Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts.
Purdy and Hurts actually met in college, with the ladder leading the Oklahoma Sooners to a thrilling 42-41 win over Purdy’s Iowa State Cyclones.
Hurts was accountable for five total touchdowns (three pass, two rush), while Purdy had six (five pass, one rush).
However, Purdy’s Cyclones failed to convert a game-tying two-point conversion to cap off an epic 20-point fourth quarter.
The last time Jalen Hurts and Brock Purdy faced off was in a 42-41 classic in 2019. Oklahoma held off a furious Iowa State 4Q rally and won when ISU tried for a 2-point conversion and failed.

Now, we may not expect eleven total touchdowns from these two, as both defenses have been elite throughout the season.
But they both have a plethora of offensive weapons and plenty of talent to try and punch their Super Bowl ticket, regardless of how notably different their NFL journeys have been thus far.
Will Purdy get the last laugh, or will Hurts make it 2-0?
We’ll have to wait and see.
