The 2024 season hasn’t been great for the New England Patriots.
They heavily invested in the quarterback position during the 2024 NFL Draft, but Drake Maye has yet to see the field.
While fans questioned the decision at first, after seeing the team’s offensive line play through five weeks, they seemed more comfortable with the organization’s choice.
Jacoby Brissett is a veteran who was seemingly set to take over the starting role for the 2024 campaign, giving Maye time to learn and get acclimated to the NFL and this offense.
However, Brissett has been worse than the team thought he might be, so they announced that Maye will be their starting QB in Week 6.
Maye is excited to make his first career start, but many fans and analysts have questioned this decision, including Bill Simmons, a noted Patriots fan.
“This is the dumbest, most incompetent, ownership/front office group since Victor Kiam went off to college,” Simmons said via YouTube.
He disagrees with this decision, especially since the Patriots take on the Houston Texans this week.
Simmons indicated that, if the Patriots were going to decide to start Maye, they should have eased him into it with a matchup like the Miami Dolphins, who the Patriots played last week.
Instead, he’s going to be thrown into the fire against a Will Anderson-led defense, which has proven to be one of the best in the league.
Maye is going to give it his best effort, of course, but with the team already holding a 1-4 record, it is interesting to see the Patriots make this move at this point in the season.
