The New England Patriots seemed to be fully on board with Jerod Mayo.
Reports stated that while some fans and media members disliked him, the organization still supported him.
That’s why it was shocking to see them part ways with him shortly after the regular-season finale.
The fact that they didn’t even wait until Monday made it even more surprising.
When asked about that, legendary head coach Bill Cowher said they may have been too rash with him.
Talking to Jim Gray and Bill Belichick on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Cowher argued that teams should give their head coaches three years and see where they’re trending before making a decision.

He acknowledged that Mayo probably said and did many things he regretted, but that’s also part of the process of growing and becoming a better head coach.
Questionable statements plagued Mayo’s tenure, and he didn’t seem accountable for any of the team’s shortcomings, even after several self-inflicted wounds.
Then again, to be fair, he inherited a non-competitive and talent-less roster, and that’s entirely on Bill Belichick, not on him.
Mayo will perhaps get another chance to be a head coach at some point in the future.
But if the Patriots believe there’s someone better for the job out there and like their chances of getting him in this coach hiring cycle, there was no point in keeping him around for much longer.
