The Chicago Bears continue their offensive overhaul ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
They used their first-round pick to add another weapon for Caleb Williams.
And while that was always the expectation, getting tight end Colston Loveland at No. 10 was still a bit surprising.
While he’s clearly a very talented player, most people expected Penn State’s Tyler Warren to be the first tight end off the board.
Needless to say, the Bears have more than enough reasons to like Loveland.
With Ben Johnson taking the reins of the offense, it seems like they saw some of the same traits that Sam LaPorta has, and given his success in the Detroit Lions’ offense, there was no reason to think those traits wouldn’t help Loveland thrive in the same way in the Windy City:
“[Colston Loveland] stands for high football character, IQ, intelligence, but he’s a great teammate,” Johnson said. “And so, yeah, I do see a lot of comparisons to [Sam] LaPorta, but that’s not just on the field. That was off the field as well, because with LaPorta, the stage was never too big or too bright. I felt that same thing with Colston the first time I met him. He doesn’t bat an eye. He performs at a high level.”
Johnson was the most sought-after commodity in this year’s head coaching carousel.
He did an outstanding job as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, and he looked like the perfect guy to mentor Williams in his second year in the league.
The Bears revamped their shaky offensive line to give their young quarterback some much-needed protection after a tough first campaign in the league.
Now, with Loveland, they’ve also given him a big-bodied pass-catcher who can be a perennial threat in the open field, just like LaPorta in Michigan.
Expectations have never been higher in Chicago, and it will be interesting to see how Johnson fares now that he’s the main guy and not an assistant coach.
