The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going through a transition period once again when it comes to the quarterback position, with superstar Tom Brady retiring from the NFL shortly after the 2022 season came to an end.
Obviously, without Brady under center, the Buccaneers will have a drastic dropoff in production at the quarterback position, as the team has brought in veteran journeyman Baker Mayfield to compete with Kyle Trask to be Brady’s successor in Tampa Bay.
Although it initially seemed like Mayfield had the job once he landed in Tampa Bay, that doesn’t seem to be the case as it has become an open competition, as the veteran talked about competing with Trask with Sara Walsh of NFL Network.

Mayfield believes that the quarterback competition in Tampa Bay isn’t about him against Trask but rather making the quarterback room better overall, which obviously makes the team as a whole that much better ahead of the 2023 campaign.
Clearly, Mayfield is going with more of a leadership approach to another quarterback battle during training camp for the veteran.
As for Trask, this is his opportunity to be a starter for the first time in his NFL career after sitting behind and learning from Brady during his time in Tampa Bay thus far.
It remains to be seen whether Trask is the real deal and capable of being a starter on the NFL level, but he’ll get his chance to show what he can do during training camp or if Mayfield struggles as the starter during the regular season and gets benched.
