He was then traded to the Panthers in exchange for a conditional fifth-rounder in the 2024 NFL Draft.
That pick becomes a fourth-rounder if Mayfield plays 70 percent of the snaps this season.
It looks like the former Oklahoma standout will be addressing his end of the bargain after he was named the starter for Week 1 of the 2022 season.
Ironically, he will be going up against his former team.
But while he already has the starting role on lock, Mayfield never shies away from imparting wisdom to his fellow quarterbacks, especially rookie Matt Corral.
The Panthers selected Corral in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft in hopes of becoming their franchise play-caller.
That’s why Mayfield is doing everything he can to prepare the quarterback from Ole Miss.

In the video shared by NFL on CBS, Mayfield is seen discussing about leverage.
Mayfield said, “He’s saying get your feet set for the out. But while you are looking and set for the out, you should be paying attention to leverage. You should be able to guess where he’s going. Because if you’re inside and he goes out, you’re gonna have to reset and do it. Now if you’re set for the out, you’re talented enough to just throw it. Set for the out, see the defender’s leverage, and go from there.”
Mayfield The Coach
That brief video shows a glimpse of Mayfield’s potential of becoming a mentor to future generations of quarterbacks.
But for now, his role is to lead the Panthers to victory.
Familiarity with the Browns’ system may help him succeed on opening weekend.
But with the regular season being an arduous grind, they will have to prepare for the long haul.
