It didn’t take long before the Minnesota Timberwolves realized they had something special with Anthony Edwards.
The star guard out of Georgia looked the part right out of the gate, playing like a legit No. 1 pick and looking like a star in the making.
But being No. 1 may not be the main thing on his mind.
Actually, Edwards is more of a No. 5, at least when it comes to his jersey number.
That’s why he recently told Shams Charania that he switched his jersey number from 1 to 5, going back to the number he wore during high school, college, and even in AAU basketball.
JUST IN: Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Anthony Edwards is changing his jersey number to No. 5.

Edwards claimed he’s going to be a whole different player next season, and while he might be right on cue, it may not have anything to do with his jersey number.
He’s coming off a breakout season in which he almost single-handedly led the inconsistent and injury-depleted Timberwolves to the playoffs, and he even willed them to a win over the eventual champion Denver Nuggets.
He’ll now get a full summer to work out with some of the best players of his generation, teaming up with rising stars to represent Team USA in the upcoming FIBA World Cup, and that could do wonders for his already rapid development.
Edwards is a privileged athlete and a hard-nosed competitor, and he’s made strides on both ends of the floor to become a much better player overall.
He’s ready to take the league by storm, and those No. 5 jerseys will be flying off the shelves in no time.
