The Miami Marlins are just a few weeks removed from hiring Skip Schumaker as their new manager.
Schumaker had spent this past season as the bench coach for the National League Central champion St. Louis Cardinals.
Schumaker had played in St. Louis for the vast majority of his MLB career.
But he will have one of his former Cardinals teammates join him on the Marlins coaching staff.
Jon Jay was a key member of the Cardinals’ 2011 World Series team and played with Schumaker from 2010-2012.
Jay has been hired as the Marlins new first base coach.

Marlins Hire Jon Jay
It appears that Schumaker is attempting to get the band back together, only this time in Miami.
Jay is also a Miami native, so the hiring presents an opportunity for a homecoming of sorts.
The Marlins finished the season 69-93 and fell short of the postseason, but with a young manager such as Schumaker, they could potentially take a step forward in 2023.
Jay, like Schumaker, was never a household name, but was a fan favorite in St. Louis and is also somebody who has plenty of winning experience.
During Jay’s time in St. Louis, the Cardinals reached the World Series twice, winning in 2011.
They also reached the NLCS in four consecutive seasons from 2011-2014 and reached the postseason five consecutive years.
So, while no longer present in St. Louis, Jay and Schumaker do have a solid rapport with one another and have experienced winning baseball before.
