The Kansas City Chiefs are trying to do something this season that has rarely been done in NFL history.
That is to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
The last time we saw a repeat champion was the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004.
For the Chiefs to pull off that feat they will need all their best players available to play.
Unfortunately, that is not the case with All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones.
He is holding out for a new contract and has yet to report to training camp.
According to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, he is still uncertain as to when Jones will report.
But, he would love to have him in as soon as possible to get ready for the season, per the team’s YouTube channel.
Jones is the best player on the Chiefs’ defense and someone they need to get back.
Even though he is a veteran that does not need much training camp time, it is still better to be around the team.
Kansas City has the best offense in the NFL and that is in large part due to Reid and Patrick Mahomes.
But, they will need a defense that can slow opponents down to remain on top.
Jones is the key force of that defense and without him, they will take a significant hit.
Last season, Jones recorded 15.5 sacks and finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
He is the type of player that cannot be replaced.
So the Chiefs front office better be ready to open their checkbook to whatever contract Jones desires.
