They won their second game in a row, defeating the Arizona Cardinals on the road in Week 7.
Nevertheless, they may no longer be a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Despite that record, Bleacher Report expressed some major concerns about Matt LaFleur’s team.
“Green Bay Is Winning But Not Playing Like a Title Contender,” the B/R NFL Staff wrote. “After the first two weeks of the season, the Green Bay Packers looked like the best team in football. Since then, they’ve come back to earth in a big way. Yes, the Packers are sitting at 4-1-1 and still have an excellent chance of challenging in the NFC North. However, they continue to play mistake-filled football — they had another 10 penalties on Sunday — and have been a completely different team on the road than at home. Is Green Bay capable of going on a deep playoff run this winter? Sure, but it needs to clean up mistakes, and getting home-field advantage could be critical.”
Quarterback Jordan Love is posting MVP-caliber numbers, yet conservative playcalling has limited him.
The Packers don’t seem to trust him to make big plays, and they instead are relying on their defense to win games.
Also, sloppy play on both sides of the ball, primarily with penalties, is keeping them from reaching their highest level.
There’s still plenty of football left to be played, and they will get two prime reinforcements whenever wide receivers Jayden Reed and Christian Watson return from injury.
They also might add a cornerback before the NFL trade deadline to address their woes at the position.
But this doesn’t seem to be a matter of personnel as much as it is a matter of focus and execution.
The Packers have all the resources to be the dominant force in the NFC, and it’s about time they live up to that projection.
