At this point of the 2024 NFL season, a few teams have established themselves as the favorites to represent their respective conferences in Super Bowl LIX.
In the NFC, it looks like it will come down to the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles, who are head and shoulders above the rest, while in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills appear to be on a crash course toward each other.
Those four teams might be the Super Bowl favorites right now, but there’s always one or two teams that make a surprising run in the playoffs.
The single-game elimination nature of playoff football is what makes it so exciting, as upsets occur more frequently than other sports that have a series format.
For example, the NBA postseason includes four best-of-7 rounds, including the NBA Finals.
Super Bowl champion Julian Edelman recently acknowledged that a seven-game series in football would be intriguing.
“I got it for you. You’re just trying to capture the do-or-die moment,” Edelman said, via Games with Names. “Cause Game 7 it’s win or go home. It’s last game of the season. So Game 7 could be a Super Bowl.”

Logistically, there’s no way the NFL could pivot to a seven-game series for its postseason format as that would take far too long given the physical nature of the sport.
While it’s fun to think about teams game planning for one opponent for multiple consecutive games, the NFL is perfectly situated where it’s at and doesn’t need significant changes to keep its product exciting.
