The Cleveland Cavaliers are heading into a significant season.
One that could even change the long-term outlook of their franchise.
That is because Donovan Mitchell is set to become a free agent after the 2024-25 season.
If the Cavs have another disappointing year, the chances Mitchell signs a long-term extension are slim to none.
ESPN Insider Tim Bontemps believes that the Cavs should look to trade Mitchell this offseason.
That way they can get the best possible package in return for him.
According to New York Basketball on Twitter, Bontemps does not think Mitchell will ever sign an extension in Cleveland.
ESPN Tim MacMahon: “…This is kind of a make or break year for the Cavs: do you think [Donovan Mitchell] signs an extension?…”
Tim Bontemps: “…I don't think there's any chance he signs an extension there ever. And if it was up to me, I would trade Donvan Mitchell… pic.twitter.com/7t8W3xzEsX

Mitchell is one of the top players in the NBA and a perennial All-Star.
But, playing in Cleveland is not a spot many star players hope for.
He will be looking for a max extension when his contract ends and the New York Knicks seem like an obvious fit.
The Knicks were in on trading for Mitchell when he was made available by the Utah Jazz.
You can bet they will still be interested in him if the Cavs want to shop him.
While the chances Mitchell is traded this offseason are low, it is something the Cavs should consider.
It is better to get something for him now than watch him walk in free agency in a few years.
This upcoming season in Cleveland might be the last one for Mitchell.
So the Cavs better do what is necessary to make a deep playoff run.
