The Detroit Lions are either the best or second-best team in the National Football League right now.
And as good as their defense has been, their offense has undeniably been the absolute best.
As such, it’s not a surprise to see that Ben Johnson is – once again – one of the leading candidates to become a head coach next season.
Nevertheless, as tempted as Johnson might feel to pack his bags and leave Motor City, Daniel Jeremiah believes he should stay put until the right job opens up.
Talking on “Move The Sticks,” Jeremiah argued that Johnson would be better off staying as the Lions’ offensive coordinator and waiting until the Cincinnati Bengals fire Zac Taylor:
“My Ben Johnson take is a little different,” he started. “But if I’m Ben Johnson, I’m keeping an eye on Cincinnati. I would rather stay in Detroit to wait two years, three years for that opportunity to open up.”

Of course, getting the opportunity to coach Joe Burrow is appealing to anybody.
Then again, Johnson has already turned down multiple head coaching opportunities once, so he might not do it again, especially if the Lions go the distance and win the whole thing this season.
The Bengals should reconsider Taylor’s future with the organization, though.
The team has had slow starts every year with him at the helm, and they will likely miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
He deserves credit for the team’s turnaround, but it might be time to take a different approach.
As for Johnson, Dan Campbell and the Lions would love to keep him around, but that might not be possible.
