The Atlanta Falcons made a questionable decision in the first round of the NFL Draft.
There were multiple reasons to like Michael Penix Jr. as a quarterback prospect, and even though he was deemed a late-first or early-second-round pick because of his age and injury-proneness, it wouldn’t be that shocking if another QB-needy team took him within the first 15 picks.
However, the Atlanta Falcons didn’t strike as the kind of team that needed a quarterback, let alone in the first round.
That’s why NFL analyst Booger McFarland believes it was a bad pick for them.
Talking on ESPN, he explained that, in the best-case scenario, Penix Jr. would be ready to take the field before the next two years.

While that could be great for them from a football standpoint, that would also mean that they wasted $100 million to sign Kirk Cousins.
Again, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking a chance on Penix Jr., who might even end up being the best quarterback in this class.
But if you were so high on him as to take him with the No. 8 pick, then why even consider making a run at the most expensive quarterback on the market?
That also doesn’t send Kirk Cousins a positive message, as you don’t use a top-ten pick to get a player unless you intend him to be a major contributor to the team for years to come, meaning they pretty much paid him to be a two-year stopgap and don’t actually think he’s the future of the team.
