The Atlanta Falcons made a big financial commitment to Kirk Cousins in the offseason.
Signing a veteran quarterback coming off a major injury was a significant risk, especially one with a history of shortcomings.
Even so, given their plethora of offensive playmakers, Cousins looked like a perfect fit for them.
Unfortunately, he didn’t look anything like his usual self in his first game with his new team, and he clearly needs to shake off the rust.
More than that, NFL analyst Greg Cosell is worried that he’s not back to full strength just yet.
Talking on the Ross Tucker Podcast, Cosell pointed out that Cousins only took one snap under center in the season opener.
“He only took one snap under center…he was in shotgun all game and he is not that kind of player…”

He stated that he’s a ‘rhythmic under center player,’ so having him in shotgun all game didn’t allow him to be his usual self.
He thinks that could be a product of the injury, as the Falcons may want to ease him back in.
Cosell also pointed out that Cousins was a little ‘stiff-legged,’ which, again, could be a consequence of the major injury he suffered.
Kirk Cousins has never been known for his mobility, but he was kind of heavy-footed in his debut, even by his standards.
Granted, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ pass-rushing unit is elite, and it also looked like they hadn’t game-planned accordingly.
But Cousins didn’t look sharp in the few instances when he actually had a clean pocket and time to operate, and he might need some more time to get his legs back under him.
