Offensive linemen are the unsung heroes of the NFL, and it is rare to see them win any individual awards.
The Detroit Lions have arguably the best offensive line in the league right now, and Penei Sewell, one of their starting tackles, is a big reason for their excellence at that position.
Analyst Gregg Rosenthal recently suggested that Sewell should at least get consideration for Offensive Player of the Year because of how great the Lions have been this year and how much Sewell has to do with their 8-1 record.
“If an offensive lineman is that incredible, that he deserves something, this would be the award to do it,” Rosenthal said, via NFL Network.

Sewell made the Pro Bowl in the previous two seasons, and in 2023 was named to the All-Pro First Team.
He has a major hand in quarterback Jared Goff’s strong play this season, as well as the excellence of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit’s two main running backs.
The team ranks seventh in rushing yards per game and third in total rushing touchdowns entering its Week 11 game.
No offensive lineman has ever won Offensive Player of the Year, with the award dominated by quarterbacks and running backs, with a few wide receivers winning the honor since it was started in the 1972 season.
The Lions don’t really have one flashy star on offense who leads the way, as many Super Bowl contenders do. They get things done with more of a team effort, which is something that makes them an easy team to root for.
