Before the start of the 2023 NFL season, Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera decided to go with second-year quarterback Sam Howell as the team’s starting signal-caller.
So far, Howell has performed well, and the decision by Rivera has looked like the right one.
Longtime NFL analyst Greg Cosell is among those who have been impressed by the young Commanders quarterback during the first two weeks of the season.
Is Sam Howell good? Like, legit long-time starting QB good?@GregCosell likes what he is seeing so far from the Commanders signal caller: pic.twitter.com/0bP6RmHDaY

Appearing on the “Ross Tucker Football Podcast”, Cosell shared with host Ross Tucker how Howell has demonstrated some impressive toughness during his short time as Washington’s starter.
“He is really tough in the pocket, Ross. And as offensive linemen, the position you played, you love it when your quarterback is going to stand there, stay tough in the pocket. That means you can protect the correct way.”
In two games this season, Howell has completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 501 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, in addition to rushing the ball four times for 24 yards and a score.
Despite his early success, the young Commanders quarterback still has a lot to prove, especially with the games Washington has coming up on their schedule.
In the first two weeks of the 2023 season, Howell and the Commanders had the luxury of taking on the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos, two teams that are currently sitting with 0-2 records.
Well, for their next two matchups, Washington has to face the Buffalo Bills, and then they have to head out on the road to take on the Philadelphia Eagles.
If Howell and the Commanders can come out of their next two games with a 3-1 or 4-0 record, then the rest of the NFL is going to know that they are no longer a team that can be taken lightly.
