The San Francisco 49ers took a big gamble when they drafted Trey Lance.
They had to give up plenty of draft capital to trade up and snatch him with the No. 3 pick, and the fact that most insiders had him going so high only spoke volumes of his potential as a prospect.
Fast forward to today, and Lance has barely been on the field, now being demoted to QB3 in favor of Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.
With those turn of events, plenty of people are ready to give up on Lance already.
That’s why Sam Monson of PFF wanted to put things in context, comparing him to Cleveland Browns’ rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Trey Lance and DTR were in the same recruiting class.
Since that point, DTR has attempted 1,414 passes including this preseason.
Lance has attempted just 492 total. College, NFL reg+preseason.

Monson pointed out the fact that they were both in the same recruiting class, yet Robinson has attempted 1,414 passes, including this preseason, whereas Lance has attempted 492 passes, including college and the NFL.
Robinson stayed in college for a fifth year after being granted another year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lance, on the other hand, redshirted his first season at North Dakota State, started the second, and then declared for the 2021 NFL Draft after just one game because of the season being shut down due to the pandemic.
Is Lance a one-year wonder who’ll never live up to the expectations? Or does he need more time to develop?
He’s just 23 years old and the physical traits are there, but he needs to be somewhere he actually gets a chance to play, and that’s not San Francisco.
