The St. Louis Cardinals had a chance to secure their first series win since late May on Sunday in their finale with the Cincinnati Reds.
However, disaster struck late and the Cardinals were unable to overcome a 4-3 deficit as they dropped the finale and the series.
The winning run scored when Tyler Stephenson grounded one to Paul DeJong, who was unable to nab Elly De La Cruz at the plate.
Adam Wainwright started for the Cardinals, giving them 5.2 innings and allowing three runs, once again missing an opportunity to secure win No. 198.
After the game, the veteran right-hander talked about his performance and the struggles of the Cardinals, summing up the team’s frustration over their recent stretch of games.
Wainwright on the #STLCards following the loss to the Reds: "The only common denominator we've had is that we're finding ways to lose – we're losing different ways every game. … It is seemingly a thing where we're losing by one (run) a lot." pic.twitter.com/PqVZEe1wEe

Since beating the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 21, the Cardinals are 6-12.
They have also struggled in one run games.
Wainwright mentioned that one thing in particular has remained a constant for these Cardinals, that being the fact that the team is still finding new ways to lose.
When he was asked about how difficult the current situation is for the Cardinals, given their long history of winning, Wainwright commented that it seems as if there’s a different answer every time.
The two-time World Series champion expressed frustration over the team’s poor play and echoed the sentiments of his Cardinals teammates.
With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 12 games below the .500 mark and eight games back of first place in the NL Central.
The Cardinals remain in last place with a record of 27-39.
