The New England Patriots have landed Mike Vrabel as their new head coach, a move that felt inevitable since their search began.
While the team explored other options during their search, they hit a notable speedbump when Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn opted to pass on their interest.
Glenn has emerged as one of the hottest names in this year’s head coaching cycle, racking up interviews with the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars all within the past week.
The Patriots, however, didn’t get their shot at Glenn. Despite reaching out before Vrabel’s hiring, Glenn decided to decline the opportunity to interview.
During a media session addressing his decision, Glenn clarified that he harbored no negative feelings toward the organization but simply felt the timing wasn’t right for him.
ESPN’s Eric Woodyard captured Glenn’s sentiment in a post on X:
“#Lions DC Aaron Glenn says the New England job ‘just wasn’t the best situation for me,’ but doesn’t feel any ill will toward the organization.”

New England’s timing raised some questions, as they approached Glenn just days after requesting to speak with his Lions colleague, Ben Johnson.
The Patriots faced criticism over their handling of the Rooney Rule during their pursuit of Vrabel, leading some to question whether their interest in Glenn, a minority candidate, was genuine or merely for appearances.
Regardless of these circumstances, Glenn’s prospects for landing a head coaching position during this cycle remain strong.
Among the teams showing serious interest in Glenn, buzz is building around the New York Jets as a potential landing spot.
