The Green Bay Packers‘ defense looked unstoppable during the first two weeks of the NFL season. Beating the Detroit Lions was no small feat, and while we know now that the Washington Commanders aren’t what they were last year, dominating them was also a good sign.
Things have been rocky for this unit over the past several weeks, as their performances haven’t been as strong, and they’ve been inconsistent outside of Micah Parsons. Rashan Gary, for instance, didn’t play many snaps against the New York Giants, which was a cause for concern among the fanbase.
LaFleur was asked about this in a press conference, and as reporter Zach Kruse noted on X, he downplayed the situation, saying, “He’s never been a huge snap count guy.” These comments don’t seem to mean much, at least to analyst Zach Jacobson, who criticized LaFleur on X.
“He is literally just saying words. If it’s a conditioning issue with Rashan Gary, just say that. There’s zero reason to come up with a handful of excuses,” Jacobson said.

Jacobson seems to believe that there’s more underneath the surface with Gary and this defense, and that they’re not saying the true reason for him not being out on every snap. Gary has been one of their best defenders since he was drafted, but for whatever reason, he didn’t see the field as much as normal last week.
It will be interesting to see how LaFleur handles this situation over the next three weeks, as the Packers face divisional opponents for three straight games. Every game counts, especially at this time of the year, and they can’t afford not to have their best players on the field on nearly every snap.
