The San Francisco 49ers continue reshaping their roster as they work toward playoff contention following last season’s disappointing 6-11 finish.
The organization made significant changes this offseason, bringing back defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and investing heavily in contract extensions for quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner while managing departures of veteran players.
Monday brought three roster moves that further define the team’s direction heading into the regular season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that running back Ameer Abdullah was placed on season-ending injured reserve, quarterback Tanner Mordecai was waived, and offensive lineman Andre Dillard was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Abdullah’s placement on injured reserve comes just weeks after he joined the team. A rib injury sustained during practice ended his season before it could begin.
His absence puts more pressure on veterans Jeff Wilson Jr. and Patrick Taylor Jr. to provide depth behind starter Christian McCaffrey.
The release of Mordecai was widely expected after a rough preseason performance. He posted the lowest passer rating among San Francisco quarterbacks in the game against Denver.
Dillard’s activation provides welcome news for an offensive line that underwent major changes this offseason.
The tackle signed a one-year deal in May but missed the start of camp due to lingering concussion symptoms.
His return gives the team another option as they work to solidify protection for Purdy.
The timing of Dillard’s availability could prove crucial. San Francisco needs to establish consistency up front while integrating new faces across the unit.
His experience offers valuable depth as the team prepares for what they hope will be a return to postseason football.
