After the San Francisco 49ers fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, the storied franchise made some head-scratching moves as their NFL offseason got underway, as the team chose to part ways with defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
Usually, whenever a team makes it to the Super Bowl, win or lose, the franchise keeps the team relatively intact unless other teams around the league start poaching their coaching staff, but the 49ers chose not to do that.
As a result of the 49ers parting ways with Wilks, the team had a very attractive position available on Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff, which was bound to get a lot of attention from defensive coordinators looking for a job this offseason.
Ultimately, the 49ers have found Wilks’ successor, with the team going in-house to give the job to Nick Sorensen, while the team will also bring in former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley in a position that has yet to be named, according to Jeremy Fowler and Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Two big hires in San Francisco: the 49ers plan to hire their defensive passing game specialist Nick Sorensen as their new defensive coordinator, and former Chargers HC Brandon Staley for a prominent staff role, possibly assistant head coach, sources tell me and @JFowlerESPN. pic.twitter.com/hbV4ykACkI

Both of these are interesting and unexpected moves, especially bringing in Staley after what was a disastrous stint with the Chargers, which ended when his team gave up 63 points to the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders.
Regardless of the choices made here, the 49ers are still very much expected to be one of the best teams in the NFL next season, as San Francisco still has one of the most talented rosters in the NFL on both sides of the football.
