The San Francisco 49ers will have a quarterback controversy entering the 2023 season.
They currently have two young players, both of which will compete for the starting spot.
Those two are Trey Lance and Brock Purdy.
Lance opened last season as the starter before suffering a broken ankle in Week 2.
In a season where the 49ers had to start three different quarterbacks, Purdy was the one that led them into the playoffs.
He was the last pick of the draft last season and played at a high level for the Niners when called on.
Many teams are now wondering if the 49ers will move on from Trey Lance in favor of Purdy.
Rumors have been swirling that the 49ers are taking calls on Lance and are open to trading him.
According to 49ers on NBCS, John Lynch described those talks as “smoke”.

Even if talks were going on, Lynch would not admit to them.
But with the NFL Draft coming up at the end of the week, this is when trades get done.
If the 49ers are serious about making Purdy their franchise quarterback, there is no reason to keep Lance.
Trading him to try and recoup some of the picks they lost in the Christian McCaffrey trade makes sense.
The 49ers traded up in the 2021 draft to select Lance third overall, with the idea of him being their franchise quarterback.
But if they do not want him to compete for that spot it makes sense to trade him.NEXT: 49ers QB Speaks Out Pre-Draft Trade Rumors
