Second-year quarterback Drake Maye led his New England Patriots to another win on Thursday, taking down the New York Jets to push his team’s winning streak to eight in a row and get the Pats to 9-2. New England now has a few extra days off to prepare for a battle against the Cincinnati Bengals next week, where they’ll go for a ninth consecutive victory.
Maye was excellent once again, completing 25 of his 34 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown, putting an end to a three-game streak where he threw at least one interception. The performance did nothing to derail his MVP campaign, though it did add to a new stat that emerged after the game and surprised many people.
After throwing for 281 yards against the Jets, Maye surpassed 280 yards for the fourth time in his career, and it was his seventh time throwing for over 270 yards. Despite this, he has yet to throw for 300 yards in a game.

It’s not an indictment on him, but it’s funny that he has gotten so close to 300 yards so many times now without going past it. No fan will care about this as long as Maye is winning games, which he is.
Failing to throw for 300 yards also likely speaks to how solid the team has been as a whole. Maye also hasn’t thrown for fewer than 200 yards all season, as this defense and this running game have both stepped up around him to make sure he doesn’t have to throw for 300 yards every week in order to win games.
Head coach Mike Vrabel won a lot of games with the Tennessee Titans following this model, and it’s working beautifully in New England. Maye will certainly surpass 300 yards at some point, but if it’s not broken, there’s no reason to fix it.
