The San Francisco 49ers have something most teams don’t: two starting-caliber quarterbacks. Most have one, and several have none.
But after watching Mac Jones play, it’s become more than evident that he deserves his shot to be a starter somewhere. With that in mind, Tom Brady recently urged the 49ers to make a bold QB move.
“You gotta go with the hot hand. Yes, you stay with [Mac Jones]. I gotta believe that’s why I’m still sitting here today, because they went with the hot hand 25 years ago,” Brady said.

Brady was speaking before San Francisco’s Week 10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but the sentiment likely remains. Jones looks tailor-made to run Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and he’s done an outstanding job of filling in for injured Brock Purdy.
It remains unknown when Purdy will be able to return from his lingering toe injury. The Niners shouldn’t rush him back while Jones continues to play at such a high level.
Granted, he’s not a dual-threat QB, but he can be an efficient passer. He’s also been putting his teammates in a position to make plays.
Jones has played himself into a big contract somewhere else, as the Niners might be having second thoughts on the extension they gave Purdy this offseason. Jones is in the first season of a two-year deal, so the 49ers could be able to get a good return for him if they choose to trade him.
Purdy is San Francisco’s quarterback of the future. But for now, there’s no reason to consider benching Jones.
