Mike Tomlin has built one of the most consistent coaching records in modern NFL history. Since taking over as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007, he has never posted a losing season while leading the franchise to two Super Bowl appearances and one championship.
That level of sustained success places him among the league’s most accomplished coaches. However, frustration has mounted among segments of the fan base due to Pittsburgh’s playoff drought.
The Steelers have not won a postseason game since the 2016 season, creating questions about the direction of the program despite regular-season stability. Former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley recently defended Tomlin during an appearance on Bleav’s Mangia Cast.
“This is one of the smartest guys I’ve ever been around,” Haley said. “Smartest intellectually, smartest football. He’s phenomenal… All these Pittsburghers [say], ‘We need a new coach.’ No. Just get a quarterback that can play, and continue to find good players. You’re in good hands. He is really awesome. I was amazed by him every day.”
Haley reinforced his position on X with a follow-up post stating, “Yes, I believe in Coach T! Jump on board!”

Haley spent six seasons as Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017 under Tomlin. During that period, the offense featured Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, and Le’Veon Bell at the peak of their careers. His firsthand experience provides context for his strong endorsement of Tomlin’s abilities.
The debate around Tomlin’s tenure often centers on postseason results, but his overall body of work remains difficult to dismiss. He has led Pittsburgh to the playoffs in 12 of his 18 seasons as head coach.
The Steelers currently sit at 5-4 and hold first place in the AFC North, positioning themselves for another playoff appearance.
Replacing Tomlin would carry substantial risk for the organization. Finding a coach who can replicate his consistency and leadership would present a significant challenge for Pittsburgh moving forward.
